The pre-reclined seat trend started back in 2006 when Allegiant Airlines made the switch to these seats. Over the years, pre-reclined seats have mainly been associated with low-cost airlines, such as Spirit Airlines, but British Airways recently announced that flights within Europe will soon have these seats as well. Why have airlines decided to make this change?
Background: Motor vehicle collisions are the leading cause of trauma-related death in the United States. Reclined seatbacks may alter crash kinetics and affect occupant outcome. We examined the effect of reclined seatbacks on occupant mortality.

Methods: Our study population consisted of United States traffic crashes from 1995 to 2005, using data from the Crash Injury Research and Engineering Network and the National Automotive Sampling System Crashworthiness Data System. Phase 1, we performed a detailed review of crash kinetics and biomechanical factors resulting in injury patterns in fully reclined occupants. Phase 2, we performed a population-based retrospective cohort study comparing outcome in upright, partial, and full recline positions. Primary outcome measure was 30-day mortality.
Results: Phase 1, flexion and compression injuries over pretensioned lap and shoulder belts resulted in severe thoracoabdominal and spine injuries in restrained occupants, with a high associated mortality. Increased lower extremity injuries from additional force loads into bolsters and panels were also noted. Phase 2, the majority (>50%) of front-seat occupants was partially reclined. Fully reclined occupants were younger (30 vs. 39 years, p
Increased tablet computer usage calls for a proper understanding of potential injury risks from these devices. The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of tablet computer reading postures on head and neck flexion and muscle activity. Nineteen participants completed read a tablet computer in four different postures (standard computer monitor, tablet on a desk, tablet in the lap, semi-reclined with tablet in the lap). Reading the tablet in a semi-reclined trunk posture with the tablet in one's lap increased (p
It is the reclined, and more restorative version of the seated Lord of the Fishes pose.Twists in general are often used as a remedy for slow digestion, fatigue, and any kind of physical or energetic congestion and stagnation in the body.
Don't get me wrong, I understand F-1 drivers do not need to withstand the same kind of sustained vertical forces that a fighter pilot does, however the legs-up reclined position seems to be far more practical for a high-G environment.
From this archived DTIC Article from 1962 it appears to confirm a lot of what the other answers said. As noted in the comments this in regards to the prone position and not a reclined position. From the summary page:
Spacecraft routinely have their pilots in the reclined position but their main objective is a fairly narrow scope compared to a fighter pilot. It seems the wrap-up answer is that other positions are useful in the context of the specific mission of a given platform but for military aircraft it doesn't seem to offer an advantage.
A very critical device in a F1 car that allows for that extremely reclined position is the HANS head and neck restraint system. Without it, the inertia of a helmeted head would carry the head forward causing grave injury in a crash, and to a lesser extent during hard braking. The reclined position starts you out closer to the limit of your safe range of motion. HANS prevents you from reaching that limit, but it also prevents you from looking down. That can be a useful skill if you are the type of pilot that likes to.. uh... land. A HANS type device isn't required in the glider pictured because it lacks the capability to rapidly accelerate or decelerate, thus leaving the pilot free to look around.
Simply put, because fighter pilots need to look around. If you're reclined too far, and you need to "check your six", it becomes an impossible task. A reclined position does minimize the effects of g-forces, but it also negates the ability to see all around you in 3D.
TikTok users sounded off in the comments section on a video posted by The Pointer Brothers, after they shared footage of a man's reclined seat appearing to angle over the tray behind him amid in-flight mealtime. (iStock)
And today's last word in business comes courtesy of Spirit Airlines. The word is pre-reclined. Pre-reclined - that's what the budget carrier is calling the seats on two of its new aircraft. Now that may sound like a comfortable way to fly, but in reality, according to Florida's Sun Sentinel newspaper, the seats do not recline at all.
These pre-reclined seats are actually fixed upright seats, which will allow Spirit to squeeze in more passengers and save on costs because non-reclining seats are cheaper. They're no moving parts, less maintenance - all of which, a spokesperson says, leads to lower fares.
Spirit Airlines, which recently introduced fees for carry-on bags, has taken the concept of no frills to new heights. Pre-reclined for a non-reclining chair - that's like saying your crashed plane is pre-landed.
Reclined Twist is great for beginners! This reclined pose has many benefits! It is so YUMMY for the spine and digestion. It is also a lovely way to release stress, tension and toxins from the body. This twist squeezes and stretches all the muscles and organs of the torso and even tones the core. Give it try and let me know what you think! This video is part of our Foundations of Yoga series.
Remember back when we used to go to the mall? Like to walk around and people watch? I would get a ride to the JC Penny entrance to meet friends, walk around, eat too much sugar and window shop. I remember when The Sharper Image came to town. It was always so much fun and restorative to go sit in those fancy massage chairs and take turns "chilling out" while avoiding eye contact with the employees. Even as a teenager I sought restorative moments. Time to take a chill pill and feel good. Now, I drop down and do reclined twist. (My, how I have evolved??) Even since shooting this little video for you I cannot seem to get enough of this pose. I just want to roll around and twist and shout every hour on the hour! We are entering that time of year where everything seems to be bustling with busy energy and excitement. Take a sneaky break from your Christmas shopping (metaphor!) and give yourself a moment in that fancy massage chair in the back of Sharper Image. 2ff7e9595c
